Presentation given to the Department of the Interior's Open Source GIS Group after presenting similar information at the FOSS4G NA 2023 meeting in Baltimore, Md. The presentation covers the adoption cycle for open source technologies, in this case cloud centric remote sensing. The timeline for the presentation starts in at FOSS3G NA 2019 in San Diego, CA where presentations were given on emerging remote sensing technologies such as the SpatioTemoral Asset Catalog (STAC) and the NSF funded Pangeo was discussed (https://github.com/pangeo-data/pangeo/issues/529). In the 4 years that followed adoption continued, leading to the launch of Microsoft Planentary Computer. The presentation uses almost 40 years of Landsat imagery over White Sands gypsum dunefield to illistrate methods we are utilizing to investigate spatiotemporal patterns in soil moisture. Utilizing cloud hosted data and tools designed to limit and distribute data transfer and computation, we are able to reduce terrabytes of data to gigabytes and calculate millions of pixel aggregations in fractions of the time require for workstations and fractions of the complexity required to use high performance clusters. Modern data visualization libraries are able to take advantage of the technologies as well to stream calculated visualization of these large datasets. Presented are the steps and concepts used to create monthly and annual aggregations (mean or median) then calculate the difference between a pixel's value at a given time step and long-term mean mean of the pixel.
