The study was funded by the participants constructing the Navajo and proposed Kaiparowits Power Generating Stations, with monitoring to be conducted three years before and three years after each power plant went into operation. The Kaiparowits studies began in 1971, and encompassed baseline studies on trace elements and the pathological condition of deer and jack-rabbits. The structure and dynamics of the biotic communities, climate regimes, productivity of key species, soils, air, and more were to be investigated within the various ecological communities. At the same time, similar research was being conducted by Northern Arizona University in relation to the Navajo Generating Station. This report contains a map showing more than 30 study sites, and a checklist of the plants by family (scientific names only).
