Camp Nelson National Monument is a 465-acre historical site established in 2018. Camp Nelson National Monument served as a depot for the U.S. Army during the Civil War and served as a recruiting/training ground for new soldiers, many of whom were formerly enslaved African Americans (Camp Nelson National Monument 2024). While the human history of Camp Nelson National Monument is well studied, less is known about the park’s natural history. The purpose of this project was to conduct an inventory of the vascular flora of the park to begin to fill this gap. Camp Nelson National Monument occurs in the Bluegrass physiographic region of Kentucky. Prior to European colonization, the vegetation of the Bluegrass region of Kentucky largely consisted of open oak-savanna. This habitat is basically a type of treed grassland: imagine an open, sunny landscape with a lush, highly diverse suite of grasses and wildflowers at your feet, and enormous, widely branching trees scattered throughout. It is sadly ironic that this once incredibly biodiverse region of native grasslands is now named after the non-native, European grass that is emblematic of its demise–Poa pratensis, commonly known as Kentucky bluegrass. The highly fertile soils that characterize this area took well to agriculture and the planting of pasture grasses like P. pratensis for horse farms. Very little remnant (original) grassland habitat remains.
