The Vascular Flora of Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument: Final Report

Mill Springs Battlefield is an approximately 900-acre National Monument near Nancy, Kentucky. A floristic survey was conducted across the 2024 growing season, yielding 289 taxa across 201 genera and 83 families. Sixty-nine (about 24%) of the documented taxa were non-native. Recommendations for restoration efforts in native habitats, as well as ideas for a grassland “reconstruction” project are discussed. Though much of Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument has been converted to agricultural land or is otherwise degraded, our findings demonstrate that the park still harbors areas of native biodiversity and presents an interesting opportunity for grassland reconstruction in Kentucky’s Pennyroyal region.
