The MOJN bat monitoring project consists of three types of monitoring: Acoustic surveys utilize bat detectors that are deployed for at least 4 nights in the winter and summer seasons following a modified version of the NABat monitoring program. White nose syndrome (WNS) surveillance monitoring consists of capture surveys at water sources on the local landscape or outside of known roosts in abandoned mines. All bats are identified to species and their face and wings are swabbed to determine if the fungus that causes WNS is present. Network bat blitzes are a coordinated effort between NPS and partner staff. Each year, participants across multiple parks and partner organizations are invited to participate in a 4 night survey at a single park where multiple sites are sampled each night using capture and acoustic methods. This allows a comprehensive snapshot of species presence, reproductive status and activity in that park. The bat blitz rotates to a different network park every year.
