SFCN Vegetation Mapping Projects (2007 - 2022)

Whelan KR, Shamblin B, Prats M. SFCN Vegetation Mapping Projects (2007 - 2022). 2020. South Florida/Caribbean Network

The SFCN participated in the Biscayne (BISC) National Park Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project, the Dry Tortugas (DRTO) National Park Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project, the Everglades National Park Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project, the Virgin Islands (VIIS) National Park Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project, the De Soto National Memorial Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project, and the Buck Island (BUIS) Reef National Monument Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project, which are all part of the NPS Vegetation Mapping Inventory Program (VMI). This program uses the National Vegetation Classification Standard (NVCS), a classification system well integrated with the major scientific efforts in the taxonomic classification of vegetation. The classification system is a Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) standard for the physiognomic levels (coarser detail). Work continues at the floristic levels (fine detail) through both the FGDC Vegetation Subcommittee and the Ecological Society of America Vegetation Panel. The map class themes represent NVCS natural/semi-natural vegetation communities. Maps are produced in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), NAD83 datum and a minimum mapping unit of 0.5 hectares. The vegetation maps must meet the National Map Accuracy Standards for positional accuracy and the minimum class accuracy goal across all vegetation and land cover classes of 80 percent. The vegetation map for EVER was completed in conjunction with the vegetation map for Big Cypress National Preserve (BICY). Both EVER and BICY vegetation maps were completed in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As such, some of the methodology for the joint EVER-BICY vegetation map is different than standard program products. This project is a repository for all datasets, protocols, reports, and other types of publications pertaining to vegetation mapping initiatives in Big Cypress National Preserve, Biscayne National Park, Buck Island Reef National Monument, Dry Tortugas National Park, De Soto National Memorial, Everglades National Park, Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, and Virgin Islands National Parks.
