The purpose of the Historic Property Project Documentation (HPPD) and Climate Change Treatment Plan (CCTP) is to update cultural resource documentation and supplement vegetation treatment plans with stabilization recommendations in response to climate change impacts at the Spring Hill/Z Bar Ranch site within Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. The HPPD is a newly defined National Park Service (NPS) workbook template that collects available information from the Cultural Resource Inventory System (CRIS) and the Facility Management Software System (FMSS) to inform the scope of the project with updated cultural landscape resources information. In this project, the HPPD informs the CCTP which will highlight vulnerable resources currently or potentially threatened by climate-driven environmental changes, such as flooding, erosion, vegetation community changes, and fire. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is significant for its representation of the transition from open range to the enclosed holdings of large cattle companies during the 1880s as well as for the architecture of the Spring Hill/Z Bar Ranch headquarters buildings and the Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse. The site has two periods of significance. The NHL period of significance is 1878 to 1904. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is also recommended as locally significant with a period of significance between 1856 to 1970, which captures the long timespan of changing cultural use and adaptation to the natural environment.
