This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Kimball Village Site near Westfield in Plymouth County, Iowa. The NHL nomination for the Kimball Village Site documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 4 and 6 as an exceptionally well-preserved, late precontact Plains Village site of the Big Sioux phase of the Middle Missouri tradition. The Kimball Village site is nationally significant for its defensive village architecture, consisting of multiple, closely spaced timber and earthen lodges apparently surrounded by palisade and ditch—a defining settlement type of the Middle Missouri tradition. The site contains data essential to understanding theories, concepts, and ideas related to the primacy of intensive maize horticulture and related topics of extraction, production, distribution, consumption, exchange, trade, and technology. The period of national significance is CE 1100-1250.
