This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Second Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. The NHL nomination for Second Presbyterian Church documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 4 as one of the most significant and intact early Arts and Crafts churches in the United States. Designed and built between 1900 and 1917, the church fully expresses the Arts and Crafts movement’s precepts in its high artistic values, honesty of materials, craftsmanship, natural themes, and unity of design. Chicago architect Howard Van Doren Shaw designed the church in collaboration with innovative local artisans, producing an interior that retains outstanding examples of Arts and Crafts stained glass, mural painting, lighting and crafting in metals, fabrics, wood, and plaster. The period of national significance is 1900-1917.
