This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the George Nakashima Woodworker Complex in Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The NHL nomination for the George Nakashima Woodworker Complex documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 2 and 4 for association with the life and work of furniture designer-craftsman George Nakashima. A significant force within the American Craft movement of the mid-twentieth century, Nakashima helped create a new paradigm for studio furniture production. He and others rejected the mass-production of the machine age while embracing Modern stylistic influences and ideas that were international in scope. The buildings in the complex were designed by Nakashima and are nationally significant for their innovative use of concrete and their skillful melding of Japanese traditional architecture and the International Style. The period of national significance is 1946-1982.
