This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Poston Elementary School, Unit 1, Colorado River Relocation Center in the vicinity of Parker in La Paz County, Arizona. The NHL nomination for Poston Elementary School documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 for its association with the confinement of Japanese Americans during World War II. As one of the first two of ten relocation centers to open, Poston became a testing site for construction techniques and programs that influenced the development and operation of other centers. Standing buildings are relatively rare at relocation center sites. As the largest, most intact, and most cohesive collection of buildings remaining on the site, the Poston I Elementary School is representative of the physical development in the center and is associated with the significant events in its history. The period of national significance is 1942-1945.
