This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Battle Mountain Sanitarium, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Hot Springs, Fall River County, South Dakota. The NHL nomination for the Battle Mountain Sanitarium, NHDVS documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 for Criterion 1 as an outstanding representation of the development of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (NHDVS), the first national system to provide benefits to volunteer soldiers. Battle Mountain Sanitarium was the only NHDVS branch to be established as an independent medical facility rather than a residential institution. The waters from mineral springs situated nearby were used to treat musculoskeletal conditions while the high, dry atmosphere was believed to ease respiratory ills. The period of national significance is 1902-1930.
