The NHL nomination for the Northwestern Branch, NHDVS, documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 as an outstanding representation of the development of a national system of medical and residential benefits for disabled veterans. It is particularly significant in representing the beginning of the network of veterans’ benefits that began growing rapidly after the Civil War, and it became increasingly important in terms of medical and geriatric care after 1900. The period of national significance is 1866-1930.
