This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Western Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (NHDVS) in Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas. The NHL nomination for the Western Branch, NHDVS documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 as an outstanding representation of the development of a national system of medical and residential benefits for disabled veterans. The NHDVS was the first national system to provide such benefits to volunteer soldiers, and as such, is a precursor to the modern system of veterans’ benefits administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Established in 1885, the Western Branch of the NHDVS represents the network of veterans’ benefits that began growing rapidly after the Civil War and became increasingly important in terms of medical care to veterans after 1900. The period of national significance is 1885-1930.
