This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad San Juan Extension in Conejos and Archuleta Counties, Colorado, and Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. The NHL nomination for the Denver & Rio Grande (D&RG) Railroad San Juan Extension documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 as an outstanding representation of the DR&G narrow-gauge railroad network, which was the largest and most ambitious narrow-gauge railroad in the United States. It is also nationally significant as the country’s longest and most complete representation of railroading in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The period of national significance is 1879-1930.
