This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Camden Amphitheatre and Public Library in Camden, Knox County, Maine. The NHL nomination for the Camden Amphitheatre and Public Library documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4 as an outstanding early twentieth-century example of the classical amphitheater form adapted for popular use. Designed by Fletcher Steele, one of the nation’s premier landscape architects, this design successfully marries the ideals of the legacy of the early Greek theater form with the scale of the Renaissance Italian garden theater and the richness of Maine’s native landscape. The period of national significance is 1928-1931.
