This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Madison Historic District in Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana. The NHL nomination for the Madison Historic District documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4. Under Criterion 1, the district is significant for its association with the pre-Civil War history related to abolitionism and Underground Railroad of Free Blacks. Under Criterion 4, the district represents the distinguishing characteristics of popular architectural styles from the early nineteenth to twentieth centuries.
