This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Baldwin Hills Village in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. The NHL Nomination for Baldwin Hills documents its national significance under NHL Criteria # 1 and 4 as a planned residential community. The idea for Baldwin Hills Village originated in the 1930s as a design alternative to the physical and social problems of urban communities caused by the turn of the century Industrial Revolution. The 64-acre property contains 162 contributing resources that chronologically exhibit the most advanced expression of community design by Clarence Stein and the proponents of the Garden City movement in America. The period of significance is 1835-1942.
