This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Cliveden (Chew House) in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania The NHL nomination for Cliveden documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4 as an excellent example of Late Georgian architecture (Criterion 4), for its outstanding ability to illustrate slavery, servitude, class status, and domestic life during the late eighteenth century (Criterion 1), and as the most important surviving landmark of the hard-fought battle of Germantown, October 4, 1777 (Criterion 1). The battle of Germantown, combined with the victory at Saratoga that same month, influenced the consummation of the alliance with France, which provided crucial assistance to the new nation. The period of national significance is 1763-1825.
