This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Carrizo Plain Archeological District in San Luis Obispo County, California. The NHL nomination for the Carrizo Plain Archeological District documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 5 and 6 for its unique concentration of precontact sites, art, and artifacts, including a major expression of precontact Chumash pictographs. Its art illustrates the cultural values of the district’s inhabitants, including religious beliefs, the social expression of these beliefs in ritual, a shared iconographic corpus, and aesthetics and stylistic precepts. The period of national significance is 10,000-200 BP (8050 BCE-1750 CE).
