This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Dr. Bob’s Home (Dr. Robert and Anne Smith House) in Akron, Summit County, Ohio. The NHL nomination for Dr. Bob's Home documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 2. Under Criterion 1, it is significant to the establishment of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a turning point in the history of alcoholism and its treatment. It is also significant under Criterion 2 as the home of Dr. Robert Smith (Dr. Bob) and Anne Smith, who were known nationally for their work in establishing AA and Al-Anon. AA philosophy and early practices that were first implemented in this house form the core of AA’s Twelve-Step program. The period of national significance is 1935-1950.
