This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Lydia E. Pinkham House in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts. The NHL nomination for the Lydia E. Pinkham House documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 2 for its association with the Lydia E. Pinkham Medicine Company and with Lydia Pinkham, respectively. The company produced Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound, which Pinkham created and marketed and which became one of the most widely available and most well-known patent medicines of the Victorian era. Pinkham and her company broke new ground in marketing by using her image as a promotional tool and because she herself was believed to respond directly to her customers, reviewing and responding to personal and often highly intimate requests for advice from customers. The period of national significance is 1877-1886.
