This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Duck Creek Aqueduct in Metamora, Franklin County, Indiana. The NHL nomination for Duck Creek Aqueduct documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 4. Built to carry canal traffic, the Duck Creek Aqueduct is the only surviving covered wood aqueduct in the United States and a remnant of the vast national internal improvements movement that occurred in the early- to mid-nineteenth century. It illustrates the widespread application of timber bridge technology to that period’s transportation systems and is an outstanding example of a Burr truss. The period of national significance is 1846.
