This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the St. Charles Line in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The NHL nomination for the St. Charles Line documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4. The St. Charles Line is significant under Criterion 1 as an outstanding representation of street railway systems and the urban growth patterns they engendered between the 1890s and the 1920s, when streetcars reached the height of their popularity in the United States. Thirty-five Perley Thomas streetcars have operated on the St. Charles Line since 1923-1924 and are significant under Criterion 4 in the engineering and design of street railway cars. Improvements made to streetcars during this period greatly improved the safety, efficiency, and flexibility with which streetcar systems could operate, allowing for even greater expansion of street railway systems in a variety of urban conditions. The period of national significance is 1893-1952.
