This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Man Mound in Greenfield, Sauk County, Wisconsin. The NHL nomination for Man Mound documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 4 as the only surviving earthen anthropomorphic mound in North America and under NHL Criterion 6 because it may reasonably be expected to yield data affecting theories, concepts, and ideas about Native North American ritual, social organization, and iconography. Man Mound is a particularly fine example of Late Woodland bas-relief earthen effigy mound construction. It communicates the cultural and aesthetic values of its designers, exhibiting an unusual degree of anatomical detail in comparison to other monumental anthropomorphic figures and zoomorphic effigy mounds. The period of national significance is AD 750-1200.
