This report presents the results of a three-year project to locate, document and assess the occurrences of rare and threatened lichen species in Shenandoah National Park. Sixty-three species of rare and threatened lichens were identified, located and assessed. Detailed accounts of each species are provided that include: information on field recognition using morphology and ecology, a summary of the North American distribution including a distribution map based on vouchered occurrences, a summary of published conservation rankings if any exist, discussion of the Shenandoah population and a distribution map of occurrences, details of the population size estimates and associated voucher information, field photographs, discussion of threats to the Shenandoah population, and a summary of management recommendations. Summary descriptions of each site visited are provided, as well as checklists of intensive inventories for a subset of those sites. An updated and revised checklist of lichens and allied fungi occurring in Shenandoah National Park is presented that includes 503 species, many not previously reported.
