This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Lafayette Park in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. The NHL nomination for Lafayette Park documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1, as one of the best and most successful examples of a residential urban renewal development in the nation, and NHL Criterion 4, as the collaboration between one of the twentieth century’s most influential Modern architects, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and developer Herbert Greenwald, planner Ludwig Hilberseimer, and landscape architect Alfred Caldwell. The period of national significance is 1956-1967.
