This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Montauk Point Lighthouse in Montauk, Suffolk County, New York. The NHL nomination for the Montauk Point Lighthouse documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1. From 1797 to 1870, this lighthouse was the most important landfall light for ships traveling the crucial U.S. foreign trade route from Great Britain and France to New York. The Montauk Point Lighthouse was built in 1796 specifically to promote New York as the receiving port for British manufactured goods. In the 1870s, the particular trade which the Montauk Point Lighthouse was built to serve - shipping manufactured goods from Europe to New York - ceased to be the dominant part of America’s foreign trade, which became dominated by exports rather than imports. The period of national significance is 1797-1820.
