This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Casa Dra. Concha Meléndez Ramírez in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The NHL nomination for Casa Dra. Concha Meléndez Ramírez documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 for its association with major trends in Puerto Rican literature and under Criterion 2 as the residence and workspace of Dra. Concha Meléndez Ramírez (1895–1983), a prolific literary critic. Ramírez was one of the most prominent female voices in the Generación del Treinta (Generation of 1930), a 1930s middle-class creole literary movement that, in response to US control over the island, shaped Puerto Rico’s twentieth-century national cultural identity. The period of national significance is 1940-1962.
