This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the George T. Stagg Distillery in the vicinity of Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky. The NHL nomination for the George T. Stagg Distillery documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4 because it outstandingly illustrates the evolution of the American whiskey industry and of the architecture and technology of distilleries. After Prohibition was repealed in 1933, the pre-Prohibition George T. Stagg Distillery was repurposed, expanded, and modernized to meet the needs of a newly re-emerging and more scientific distilling industry. It clearly documents the way in which changes in technology resulted in new building and equipment types and the reconfiguration of old ones, as well as the significant degree to which Federal government policies and regulations impacted the architectural character and operation of distilleries. The period of national significance is 1933-1953.
