This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Pear Valley near Eastville in Northampton County, Virginia. The NHL nomination for Pear Valley documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 4. Constructed in the second quarter of the eighteenth century, Pear Valley is an excellent, rare example of a distinctive form of vernacular architecture that developed in the Chesapeake as early immigrants to the colonies adapted to their new circumstances. It presents the range of framing techniques carpenters employed during the development of building forms and methods that adapted English precedents to the Chesapeake. With its small size combined with high-quality craftsmanship, Pear Valley exemplifies the character of many early middling planters’ houses. The period of national significance is circa 1725-1750.
