This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Florida Southern College Historic District in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida. The NHL nomination for the Florida Southern College Historic District documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 4. The campus contains the largest “integrally designed” grouping of buildings by architect Frank Lloyd Wright on a single site, reflects Wright’s interest in community building, and is a benchmark in his career. The campus became the first strong departure away from Beaux-Arts planning principles that had dominated American campus design since the nineteenth century. As a multifaceted project, the Florida Southern College campus represents most of Wright’s philosophies about architecture, design, and the shape of the modern landscape. The period of national significance is 1938-1958.
