Ludwig JC, Barlow PA, Witsell T. 2026. Richmond National Battlefield Park: Grassland Inventory and Assessment. Science Report. NPS/SR—2026/374. National Park Service. Fort Collins, Colorado. https://doi.org/10.36967/2315976

This report summarizes the results of plant, insect, and bird inventory and monitoring work conducted in several units at Richmond National Battlefield Park (RICH) between June 2022 to April 2024, with the integration of supplemental plant data from fire effects monitoring transects collected prior to 2022. Study sites include open field units at Malvern Hill battlefield (plants, insects, birds) and Gaines’ Mill battlefield (plants, insects, birds), and a woodland unit at Cold Harbor battlefield (insects). Annotated lists are provided for each group, documenting species occurrence in each unit. Current grassland condition assessments, desired future conditions, management recommendations, and future assessment protocols are provided for each unit based on assessments of the species groups and comparisons to reference sites. This report also includes background information on grasslands in Virginia, including information on grassland classification, protection, restoration, and management, and grassland research and monitoring needs. It includes nine figures, six tables, and eight appendices.
