National Park Service. 2025. Dataset: 2023 Yellow-billed Loon Survey in Cape Krusenstern National Monument and Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, Alaska. National Park Service. Fairbanks, Alaska. U.S.A.

The National Park Service conducted an aerial survey of Yellow-billed Loons in Cape Krusenstern National Monument and Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, Alaska from 2023-06-21 to 2023-06-27. Park biologists surveyed for 5 days, making 426 observations of five loon species. Sixty-five observations were made of Yellow-billed loons, including 34 pairs, 15 nests and 4 eggs. Dataset Sensitivity Statement: [SENSITIVE DATASET] NPS internal use only. The resource described in this report has been designated as a species of concern and is legally protected. The rules for dissemination for Yellow-billed loons specifically state (Koelsch, 2019): “Legally Protected Under National Parks Omnibus Management Act, Section 207, of 16 U.S.C. § 5937; Specific location (geographic coordinates) of this species of concern will not be released to the general public due to their global rarity and nest site fidelity. Any such data collected will be redacted from the publicly released datasets. This protects collaborating agencies data as well; but does not preclude sharing between collaborating agencies. Processed data with coordinates redacted (such as summaries, processed maps, or products) remain publicly available. This will be done indefinitely.” This Data Release publishes the following deliverables: DeliverableIdentifier Deliverable Format YB01 Survey geodatabase (YBLO.gdb) Geospatial layer YB02 Park Observer files .poz and/or comma separated values (CSV) text files.
