The NHL nomination for Stepping Stones documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 2 for its association with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), with AA co-founder Bill Wilson, and with Lois Wilson, co-founder of Al-Anon Family Groups and founder of Alateen. The Twelve Steps program that Bill Wilson created, together with AA, Al-Anon, and Alateen, significantly altered the public’s perception and understanding of alcoholism and alcoholics. They disseminated the idea of alcoholism as a disease among the general public and created a model for the treatment of addiction that has enabled millions of people worldwide to achieve and sustain sobriety.
