This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Saint Peter's Parish Church in New Kent County, Virginia. The NHL nomination for Saint Peter's Parish Church documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 4. The distinctive features of St. Peter’s make it an exceptional architectural specimen from early in the colonial period that represents the transition from “artisan mannerism” of the 17th century, to the “neat and plain” neoclassical style characteristic of colonial-era churches of the 18th century. As an unusual example of the artisan mannerist style and an interpretation of English high-style architecture by American master craftsmen, St. Peter’s contributes to our understanding of early American architecture. The period of national significance is 1701-1741.
