Walnut Canyon National Monument FFI Fire Effects Monitoring Data 2024
Brannfors L, Tumicki M, Handforth L. 2025. Walnut Canyon National Monument FFI Fire Effects Monitoring Data 2024. National Park Service
Fire effects monitoring data collected at Walnut Canyon National Monument in the National Park Service Intermountain Region. The data were collected with standard NPS FMH protocols primarily between May and November by the Saguaro National Park fire effects monitoring crew from 1993-2009 and the Grand Canyon National Park fire effects monitoring crew in partnership with the NPS Inventory and Monitoring program's Southern Colorado Plateau Network (SCPN) in 2015, 2020, and 2024. Monitoring types include Ponderosa Pine (PIPO) and Pinyon-Juniper (PIED). 1993-2009 Data collected from the 50 x 20 m FMH forest plots include tree inventory (overstory and pole/sapling) to obtain density and basal area, fuel load using Brown's method for inventorying surface fuels and biomass, seedling tree density, shrub density, and herbaceous species cover and richness measured via 50 meter point intercept transects. In addition, post-fire assessments are conducted of burn severity to vegetation and substrates and scorch and char of trees. Photographs are taken from eight locations in the plot to document change. 2015-Present Data collected from the 50 x 20 m FMH forest plots include tree inventory (overstory and pole/sapling) to obtain density and basal area and fuel load using Brown's method for inventorying surface fuels and biomass. Shrub, herbaceous, seedling, and canopy cover sampling are the responsibility of SCPN according to their integrated upland protocols and are contained in their database (see Notes section). In addition, post-fire assessments will be conducted of burn severity to vegetation and substrates and scorch and char of trees. Photographs are taken from eight locations in the plot to document change. Data from 1993-2009 contain some uncorrectable errors. Use with care. See Notes section. A map of prescribed burns conducted is included.
