This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Olson House in Cushing, Knox County, Maine. The NHL nomination for the Olson House documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 2 for its association with artist Andrew Wyeth. The Olson House was the setting of Wyeth’s 1948 tempera painting, “Christina’s World," one of the most iconic images in American art. Between 1938 and 1968, Wyeth spent every summer here, documenting and interpreting the lives of Christina and Alvaro Olson and their early nineteenth-century farm. Wyeth developed his mature style of painting here, limiting his color palette to subtle earth tones and his painting medium to watercolor and tempera. The period of national significance is 1939-1968.
