The NHL nomination for Woodlawn Cemetery documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4 as a superlative example of a landscape-lawn cemetery with an unparalleled collection of artistically important memorials set in a designed landscape. In the 1850s and 1860s, the landscape-lawn ideal became the dominant concept driving American cemetery design and a major influence on landscape architecture overall. Woodlawn, founded in 1863 as a rural cemetery, adopted a landscape-lawn approach in 1867 to become one of the most significant Gilded Age cemeteries in the United States. The period of national significance is 1863-1940.
