This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the University of Wisconsin Dairy Barn in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin. The NHL nomination for the University of Wisconsin Dairy Barn documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 as the site of the "single-grain experiment." Carried out from 1907 to 1911, this cattle feeding study reached far beyond livestock, helping to overturn the prevailing German chemical model of evaluating the nutritional value of foods, and laid the foundation for the emergence of the modern science of nutrition. The period of national significance is 1907-1911.
