This report represents the results of a Historic Resource Study (HRS) conducted for Richmond National Battlefield Park (RICH) in Richmond, Virginia. RICH commemorates, interprets, and actively manages cultural and natural resource across more than 4,000 acres of historical landscapes associated with the American Civil War in Virginia's Piedmont and Coastal Plain (also called Tidewater) regions. The purpose of the HRS id to provide an overview of RICH's history, identify and evaluate historic resources within their appropriate historic contexts, and update the status of historic properties already listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This report serves as a planning and resource management tool that guides RICH's preparation of NRHP nominations, the completion of baseline resource management documentation, updates to resource records in the NPS Cultural Resource Information System (CRIS), and preparation of interpretive programming. The HRS encompasses all resources 50 years of age or older and addressed any resources less than 50 years that are exceptionally significant. The NPS identified five historic contexts as a framework for the HRS evaluations: Indigenous Settlement in Richmond and Surrounding Area, Colonial Era to Civil War (1607-1861), Civil War (1861-1865), Reconstruction and Beyond (1865-1920), and Commemoration and Preservation of Richmond's Civil War Battlefields (1921-Present). This HRS report describes these contexts and the evaluation of over 130 park resources, including contributing and non-contributing resources identified in the NRHP documentation for the Richmond National Battlefield Park Historic District (NRIS 66000836) accepted by the Keeper of the NRHP in 2018.
