The Gila monster, Heloderma suspectum that occurs in the southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico, is an elusive reptile for which basic population genetic information is lacking. Threats include habitat destruction from agriculture and urbanization. Using microsatellite markers a goal of the study was to understand patterns of gene flow and potential threats from habitat fragmentation. Genotyping also may prove helpful in identifying the source populations of individuals that have been illegally collected for the pet trade.
