Saguaro National Monument was elevated to National Park status on Oct. 14, 1994. In addition, funds were designated to purchase land to add to the park to act as a buffer to encroaching suburbs in the quickly growing area of Tucson, AZ. Brief descriptions of the characteristics of saguaros and the biodiversity of the geographic area of the park are included in the article.
