Increased development, traffic, traffic accidents, non-native grasses and poachers all contribute to increasing threats of damage to native plants along Picture Rocks Road which bisects the Tucson Mountain District of Saguaro National Park. Park resources are protected but people have been caught illegally collecting plants, dead saguaro ribs and boots. This study was to determine the effects of the aforementioned threats on saguaros growing alongside the road.
