Compilation and analysis of historic data related to flows on the Obed River and tributary streams

Obed Wild and Scenic River (OBRI) was included in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers system on October 12,7976 because it possesses "outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values" (Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, 82 Stat.906, P.L. 90-542). The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act established a policy for the United States to preserve selected rivers in their freeflowing condition and to protect their water quality and other vital national conservation purposes. The water resources of the Obed River are considered to be among the highest quality in the State, but occur in an area wit\comparatively limited water resources and increasing development and water consumption. The level of regional development now occuring makes water quantity and quality within the Obed River Basin a concern. Baseline hydrologic data has been collected by several agencies for multiple reasons and applications. However, a coherent compilation and assessment of this data has not been made. The purpose of this report is to present a compilation and analytical summary of historic data affecting the hydrology of the Obed River Basin with an emphasis on pre- and post- OBRI establishment. The Obed River is tributary to the Emory River. Therefore, all stations within the Emory River Basin were included. The compilation shows what data is available. The basic data analysis is intended to increase understanding of basin hydrology. The report should also provide a base from which further investigations can be formulated. Available hydrologic data for the Emory River and Obed River Basins has been identified and summarized. This report provides statistical analyses of historic data recorded at stream gages that are pertinent to the study area. The analyses emphasize some key components of stream hydrology that are critical to maintaining the character of the Obed Wild and Scenic River.
