WRST personnel began collecting anecdotal information shortly after the Park was created in 1980. More formal bird surveys were begun in 1989. Two breeding bird survey (BBS) routes (Robbins et al 1966), 1 along the Nabesna Road (99-006) and 1 along the east end of the McCarthy Road (99-005), were established. A third survey route was added along the west end of the McCarthy Road (99-010) in 1990. Three off-road survey routes (Ralph et al 1992), 2 in May Creek and 1 in Chisana, were begun in 1992. All survey routes are run annually.
