Crested beauties

Kreutz D. 2006. Crested beauties. Arizona Daily Star. Tucson, Arizona. 15 Jul 2006. Two pages

Two Tucsonans have tracked down and photographed (as of the time of writing of the article) more than 400 crested, or cristate, saguaros which exhibit fan-shaped crests that make them stand out from the more usual rounded top shape. The two avid hikers call it their "crest quest" with a goal being to locate as many crested saguaros as they are able. Causes for cresting of saguaros has not been determined but may include genetic quirks, frost damage or growth changes brought on by insects, lightning strikes or bacterial infections.
