Extreme cold, including freezing temperatures, caused an increase in saguaro deaths, especially affecting older ones. The freeze also had a "horrific" effect on saguaros' blooms. The saguaro population was not facing a large-scale die-off as a result of the freeze, yet the immediate future of many saguaros might be impacted by the cold snap's apparent effect on blooming and fruit production.
