In the National Park Service (NPS), historic furnishings reports (HFR) are detailed documentation projects that record, analyze, and recommend the restoration or interpretation of historic furnishings in NPS-managed properties. The Shelton House is a historic home located at Totopotomoy Creek Battlefield (also known as "Rural Plains), a unit of Richmond National Battlefield Park. The Shelton House HFR builds on and complements existing planning reports, documenting historic use and occupancy of the structure from 1725-2006, supporting interpretation of the site in the period of historical significance (1864), and providing guidance for future media planning. The amount of rehabilitation to be undertaken at Rural Plains and the timeline for its completion were uncertain at the time this report was written. The park plans to begin work on a new Long Range Interpretive Plan in FY 2021. This HFR therefore provides limited recommendations for historic furnishings and suggests that these recommendations be reassessed after rehabilitation is complete, in order to take into account future operating conditions.
