In 2004, 2005, and 2006, as a part of the second Pennsylvania Breeding Bird Atlas project (PBBA; Wilson et al. 2012), breeding bird surveys were conducted in the Pennsylvania portion of two National Park Service (NPS) units in northeastern Pennsylvania: Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DEWA) and Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreation River (UPDE). The Pennsylvania portion of these units lies along the western bank of the Delaware River. DEWA is approximately 28,175 ha in size, with roughly 11,662 ha in Pennsylvania. UPDE has approximately 22,490 ha within the authorized boundary, with 7,363 ha in Pennsylvania. The objective of this project was to document the breeding bird community occurring in the Pennsylvania portion of each NPS unit using PBBA site selection methodology and field sampling protocols. In addition to the largely volunteer effort, the PBBA employs a field crew of “point counters” (bird surveyors) specifically trained to identify the state’s breeding birds. With support from the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program (Eastern Rivers and Mountains Network), qualified and trained PBBA point counters dedicated additional time and survey locations to UPDE and DEWA during 2004, 2005, and 2006, greatly augmenting the coverage that would have otherwise occurred in this region. These data are useful to the NPS as a breeding bird inventory and will also enhance the data available to the PBBA for this region.
